Transforming challenges

into connection

Providing evidence-based therapy services via telehealth to children, teens, and families

Why Mainstay?

Our philosophy

On a sailboat, the mainstay is a rope or cable that steadies and provides support for the ship’s mast. Over time, use of the word “mainstay” has developed to mean “a person or thing on which something else is based or depends.”

At Mainstay Psychology, we believe that our connections with family and loved ones are the mainstay for behavioral and mental health. We strive to strengthen family connections to promote increased awareness and improved family functioning.

Melanie Nelson, PhD

With over 20 years of experience, I am dedicated to providing a welcoming, nonjudgmental, and supportive space for kids and caregivers to explore and grow. I focus on building effective communication and sharing practical strategies for emotional and behavioral well-being. I aim to provide insight and skills that help children, caregivers, and families navigate behavioral and mental health challenges while creating lasting connections.

Dr. Nelson is certified as a PCIT therapist and Global Trainer through PCIT International as well as an ADHD Certified Clinical Service Provider. She is authorized to provide telehealth therapy services in most US States and territories through PSYPACT.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What if my child won’t pay attention to a video call?

No worries! We do not expect children, especially young children, to sit in front of the screen. We engage children in activities with their caregivers to promote improved behavioral and emotional health in and out of session.

What is Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)?

PCIT is an evidence-based intervention for young children with behavioral or emotional concerns and their caregivers. Find out more here.

For older children and teens, we use a similar intervention known as Parent Management Training (PMT).
